Title : QuakeBert Partial Coversion (C)1997 Chris Wigman. All rights reserved Filename : QBert099.zip Version : 0.99 Date : 14/10/97 (UK date) Editors used : Levels - (mostly) Quest v1.1 and the great BSP v.85 (touching up) QC - Er, DOS Edit and FastQCC for compiling (it is VERY quick!) PAK - Pakexplorer v1.0 and AdQuedit v1.3 Author : Chris Wigman Email : cwigman@ndirect.co.uk Credits : IMPORTANT: Creds must go out to the following- Brian "FragBert" Kelly: creator of the original QuakeBert level and my inspiration for this conversion. Check out QuakeOn by Brian. Rob Albin: creator of Chasecam][. Not the best way to play Quake itself, but for TCs and PCs like QB, it's a great addon for budding Quake editing fans. Jacob Fenwick, Robin Ball, Jim Dodge: Creators of the excellent Drone monster used in this PC. And of course, iD. The gods of software creation who gave us this gaming masterpiece called Quake. Type of Modification -------------------- Partial Conversion. Deathmatch : no (points are in there) Single Player : yes (co-op up to 3 also possible) Quake C : yes, specifically Drone and Chasecam code, plus a little extra by me to get the whole thing working properly. ;) Sound : yes (Drone sounds, no others new) MDL : yes (Drone MDL and DOEs Player MDL, because it's great) Levels : yes (more about 'em in the next section) Description of the Modification ------------------------------- So who can remember the original QBert then, eh? On those old 8-bit systems. The idea was, you were QBert. Starting at the bottom of a triangle of squares in a psuedo-isometric view, you had to jump on them all, and avoid any nasties that appeared along the way. Their intent was to stop you. It was also sodding hard. QuakeBert is the 3D version of this classic game. Using the Quake engine, this addon lets you play QBert in a new perspective. Bert is back, only now he sports an axe. ;) Using the Chasecam view, the objective is the same, and again many things will stop you along the way: Enforcers: on many occasions, two of them will try to shoot you down. I have decreased their rate of fire to one at a time rather than two, becase two shots made the game impossibly hard. You can't kill these guys, so stay on your toes, and light up those blocks. Drones: When one of these are on the level, you don't want to get too close to it, unless you have to. 'Cos it wakes up. And it's a bit pissed off if you interrupt its slumber. Lure the enforcers to shoot at it. Bad blocks: green squares which sap your health. The ground: fall off, and you die. It's as simple as that. There are one or two more that you'll discover along the way... Each time you complete a level, you will start the next with 100% health. You cannot change to any other weapon except the axe. After the practice level, level 2 begins. The structure of the game goes like this: Level 1 - Practice Level 2 - a Level 2 - b Level 2 - c Level 3 Level 4 - a Level 4 - b ...and so on... Level 3 is an intermission, as is 5, and 7. These are much different to the normal levels, as you will see when you get to them. They're tough, so good luck. Can you find the secret level? TIPS: - Don't get too close to the Drone until you have to. - Try not to fall off. - Mouse AND keyboard control is the best - REALLY. (I couldn't play it at all easily with JUST the keyboard) - Mouse makes dodging fire MUCH easier. - Find the secret level. - Erm, and use the mouse! - Play it with some good Detroit techno playing in the background. :) NOTE: In v0.99 the secret level is not included. I haven't finished it yet! How to Install the Modification ------------------------------- 1: Create a subdirectory in the Quake one, called quakebrt. 2: Unzip qbert099.zip to the new directory. 3: Copy the Quakebrt.bat file to the main Quake directory (you WONT need to alter the batch commands). 4: Type QUAKEBRT whenever you wish to play. Technical Details ----------------- This .qc modification is derived from id Software's .qc source version 1.06. It has been tested on 1.08 (the effing hard MP2 and the recently released REAL version of v1.08 released on id's ftp site), and will most probably work with 1.07 (MP1), and standard Quake 1.06. I have not tested it with versions prior to 1.06, and any versions of WinQuake. I would VERY MUCH appreciate feedback in this area. For those of you that are interested, the modifications that I made are to force the axe only, to skip to levels when necessary (more on this in a minute), a new ending, and a few minor modifications to the Enforcer and Drone monsters. The original Drone code and MDL, as well as Chasecam .TXT files are included, for two reasons: 1) necessity when using them in patches, and 2) if you wish to know more about either patch. Level skipping: Levels 2, 4, and 5 are repeated 3 times, each. What happens is that when you first start one of these levels, SKILL is at 1. Each time you complete it, the skill increases by one, and a few new things may turn up! This was done because I wanted to repeat levels, and save space (it is incredibly lame and space-consuming if you have two maps or more in a patch and the only differences are new entities). Author Information ------------------ I (Chris Wigman), am 16, currently at senior school taking O levels (GCSEs). And I'm also a complete Quake addict, unless you hadn't noticed. ;) My mail address is at the top of this file, but here are the other addresses (e-mail and http where applicable) of the others that did something used in this PC. QuakeBert level: Brian "Fragbert" Kelly: bekelly@erols.com http://www.infomdi.com/brian/quakeon Chasecam ][: Rob Albin: albinatr@apci.net http://www.apci.net/~albinatr/quake Drone enemy: Jacob Fenwick: dor12@concentric.net http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Park/2134 Robin Ball: ballra@falmouth.ac.uk http://www.compulink.co.uk/~999sw/pages/robinb.htm Jim Dodge: jdodge@net-link.net Distribution Permission ----------------------- You may freely distribute this PC in any electronic form, as long as this file and the other three text files CHASECAM.TXT, DRONE.TXT, and QBLEVEL.TXT, accompanies the original .PAK file. Even better, is to retain the .ZIP file in its original form. Changing it to a RAR, ARJ file etc... is permitted if necessary. However, it many not be altered in ANY way unless you have explicit permission from myself. If you wish to use the Chasecam or the Drone in your own production then I suggest you amble your way over to the respective authors' sites. You can then download the ORIGINAL, and probably newest version of the addons. Availability ------------ For availability of the Chasecam etc... check their .TXT files. This modification is available from the following places: http://www.ndirect.co.uk/~cwigman/quake/ www.cdrom.com/pub/quake/partial_conversions/ (and its mirror sites obviously) Other sites soon, hopefully. Version Information ------------------- 0.9 Beta, unreleased, but tested by some in order to iron out any stuff before full release. 0.91 Pre-release.
