This is a tutorial for burning QuakeDC as a non-selfboot disc for DC.

The only inconvenience of this method is that you will need the Utopia boot CD to play it.

Start Easy CD Creator, and create a new mixed-mode CD layout.

Right-click on the CD layout and select "Properties". Or use the "File -> Properties" menu (see above).

In the "General" tab of the CD layout properties, select the ISO9660 file system and the mode 1. You can put anything in the volume label. Then click on the "File System" tab.

In the "File System" tab of the CD layout properties, select "Long file names". Then click on OK.

Now click on the "Audio CD Layout" inside the "Mixed Mode CD Layout".

Quake's original levels use 10 audio tracks, numbered as track 2-11 on the PC CD. When the game orders the engine to play a CD track, QuakeDC increases the number of the track requested by 2. This means that Quake's original audio tracks must be numbered as tracks 4-13 to play properly on QuakeDC.

So, in order to burn the tracks in the correct sequence, you must add 2 dummy audio tracks before the Quake audio tracks.

Be careful to not make a mistake here.

The picture below shows an audio CD layout with 2 dummy audio tracks, and then the Quake audio tracks. The numbers of the audio tracks shown will actually be 1 track greater, because the actual first track is the data track.

So, in the picture below, the actual number of the audio tracks is 2-13, not 1-12.

Now select the data track, and put the files here as shown.

Then click on the ID1 directory and put the .pak files you want. It should at least have a PAK0.PAK file here in order to work.

If you want to burn the shareware version of Quake, just add the PAK0.PAK. If you want to burn the full version, add the PAK1.PAK too.

All .pak files should follow a numeric sequence (PAK0, PAK1, PAK2, PAK3, etc.).

Now go burn the CD. Check the "Close session and leave CD open" option if you want to add mods to the CD in the future. Otherwise, click on "Disc at once".

About the write speed, what I can say is that I've got better results burning in 2x, even better than burning in 1x. But, if the CD-R you will use has a paper or plastic label on it, I recommend using the 4x speed.

After successfully burning the CD, you can play it on the DC using the Utopia boot CD. Type "cd_enable 1" on the Quake console, and it will play music from the next time that an audio track is called.
